Every few years it's worth revisiting your working practices to see if there's been a change that you could benefit from. This is a story about our last change, which makes liberal use of mixed metaphors.

Volunteer to help Drupalcon London 2011

Over at the Drupalcon London working group blog we've put up a list of roles for volunteers. There's everything from Content Creators through to Social Media Crew Members. Jobs big and small. If you'd like to help make Drupalcon London 2011 a fantastic event, then head over there and let us know.

Tanasity supports Drupalcon London 2011

Drupalcon is the twice-yearly conference gathering Drupal developers, designers and users from across the world. It alternates between venues in North America and Europe, and has grown from a tiny event with about 40 people, back in 2005 to about 3,000 people at the most recent North American Drupalcon and 1,200-1,400 at the most recent European event.

At the end of 2009 a team of UK Drupal supporters came together to bid for Drupalcon 2011. We put together a bid, and were selected as the preferred bidder. Since then we've been beavering away with the planning.

Today we're pleased to be able to tell you that together with Tim Millwood, our Director Jeff Veit is co-leading the London 2011 team aiming to make Drupalcon London 2011 the best event yet.

Using a framework vs an application as the basis for work

We were at a meeting last week where it was suggested that Django would be a good way to develop a CRM solution with web integration. I thought I'd take a few minutes to outline the advantages and problems of this approach.

There is at least one advantage to using Django:

  • A custom application, written just for you can match your needs exactly.

But on the other hand:

Hosting & lock-in

Of course we provide hosting if a client needs a site hosting, and we almost always host sites during the development phase of the lifecycle, but given the choice between hosting ourselves and using a dedicated hosting company, we would normally advise our customers not to host with us.

Some customers find this quite surprising, but we see it as a benefit.

Drupal Cambs/East of England meeting - 8th Feb 2010

There's a Drupal Cambs meetup tomorrow evening about Drupal Tips. Jeff Veit will be co-presenting.

Drupal in London 2011

We're immensely pleased to be able to report that London is the recommended venue for Drupalcon Europe 2011.

Tanasity's Jeff Veit will be the joint team leader for the conference. Indeed, Tanasity wrote large portions of the conference proposal.

Originally Cambridge was mooted as the venue for the conference, but it was eventually rejected because we don't have a venue that is big enough; we expect at least 2,000 delegates for the week-long event.

Looking forward to the best Drupalcon so far!

UK government uses Drupal!

It's not just the White House that uses Drupal; Tanasity is pleased to see that the UK government is too, for their new site http://data.gov.uk/.

The project has as an advisor, Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the web, and he's a fan of Drupal, using it for his own website. And Drupal also has good data-integration mechanisms which would have been key for this project. So perhaps it's not as surprising as it might be. Still, as far as Drupal is concerned, this is another major win.

Server update

We've been making significant changes to this server this weekend. If you notice anything odd, please let us know.

Thanks.
