Jeff Veit

Wide ranging experience in software development - financial, telecoms, education and shrink-wrap software industries. I'm versatile, equally interested in technical and business issues, and skilled in ensuring projects and programmes run smoothly. I maintain abilities at the sharp end, whilst taking a strategic view of software development

Skills
Thorough software development and project management background with experience on large and small projects. Consultancy experience.

Programme/Development manager
I have designed strategies for product families, and had overall responsibility for managing entire development programmes.

Project manager/Software team manager
I have managed the build of commercial software products - from inception to delivery. I have recruited and lead small teams of very high quality software developers to deliver exceptional commercial products. I have formal project methodology experience, and experience of iterative/extreme practices.

Analysis/Specification/User interface design
I have requirements and needs analysis experience. I have written detailed functional specifications for bespoke and shrink-wrap software. I have an active interest in user-friendly interface design. My products have been successful in the marketplace.

Developer/Architect/Integration
I maintain my hands-on development skills - about 50% of my time is spent on this. I have experience in technology for many uses, including web applications, commercial and bespoke business applications, and software for children and multimedia applications. I have architected software solutions and have authored frameworks and libraries for web and application development. Have devised systems integration mechanisms.

Tester/ Change control/Release control
I have designed and built automated testing software. I have developed testing programmes, and managed them. I have designed and built test harnesses and run tests for applications and services. I have experience of end-to-end testing for large-scale systems. I have devised and run integration tests for business critical projects. I have managed the change control process and the release of software into production.

Tenders/3rd Party selection/Offshore
I have experience in offshore software development, having run tenders, selected vendors, written contracts and then managed offshore projects. I have a very good understanding of the key importance of the cultural aspects involved in offshore work.

Business critical
I have repeatedly been responsible for projects where failure could not be afforded, in some cases where the deadlines were absolutely fixed. Business critical projects. No failures; I have good risk management experience.

Consultancy

I regularly undertake investigations into new technology and ideas for startups, potential investors and existing businesses, writing reports and giving presentations and have experience of package selection.

Training

Self study
Recently the Web Forms 2.0 proposal - we desperately need a richer user interface to build web applications, and this may be heading in that direction. I read copiously - some recent books: The Beermat Entrepreneur, The Future of Software. Linux - very interested in the Open Source movement - for most people, software is unsustainably expensive in comparison to hardware and this may be the beginning of change. In my spare time I still enjoy hands-on software development - I subscribe to PC-Plus, and Dr. Dobb's. I'm a keen Internet user; I enjoy Slashdot. Tinkering with hardware.
