Friendly

|
|
We try to be an open, friendly company.
We aren't stereotypical software people; we like talking
to people. Not many of the people who know us say that
we are ordinary, but that might be because we like bright
colours.

You are
at the center |
|
Software exists only to serve users
and must be designed with people at the centre. The experience
that you have of software is uppermost; software should
be a pleasing to use, having been designed with an appreciation
of aesthetics and the flow of use. Well-designed software
has some important inner qualities - it is extensible,
flexible, and can be used in ways that the designers did
not anticipate. We believe in excellence in software development.
We don't think that people who use software should need
to be rocket scientists. |

Trust and
Integrity |
|
We value integrity highly. Our customers
trust us because we are honest. We won't always tell you
what you would like to hear. But we will do everything
in our power to help you solve your problems whether we
are consulting on a troubled project, developing new software
or helping you in other ways. |

Balance
|
|
We will not tell you that our software
will enhance your aura or that our software is a revolutionary
advance that includes an option to slice bread and toast
it. Instead, we endeavour to balance our messages. We
will tell you about the limitations of our software as
well as its better bits. We will tell you about the future
developments we plan too. Please bear our stance this
in mind when you read our site; it means that at times
we understate the effectiveness of our work. |

Simple |
|
We like to keep things simple. An example
is this web site.
In some ways it would have been easier to build this site
so that was only viewable on modern browsers, but that's
not simple for you and it's not friendly. Instead we put
in a lot of effort to make sure that it worked on older
browsers as well as newer ones.
This meant restricting the range of features we'd like
to have used. This site doesn't use JavaScript for instance,
so it doesn't have dancing bunnies that rove across the
page, or even animated menus. it's a deliberate decision
that means that people in large companies who sometimes
aren't allowed JavaScript will be able to view the site
just as well as someone who does have it. This decision
was a key driver for the menu interface used at the top
of the pages. We think the trade-off for this particular
site is worthwhile. |

Varied |
|
We like working on hugely variatied
projects - large ones and small ones. Software for entertainment
and software for numerical work. Variation is interesting.
It allows us to bring new ideas to problems. It lets us
learn. |

Learning |
|
We are a Learning Company. We value
knew knowlege highly because constantly learning new skills
is especially important for people involved in software;
we bring deep experience to bear on new problems in new
environments. |

Discussion |

Jeff Veit runs TangledTime, a web site
for discussion of technology and business. It's got lots
of idea pieces written by him. |

involvement |

We support CHASE (Cambridge Hi-Tech
Association of Small Enterprises) with our time. It's
a club for people interested in business and technology.
Jeff Veit chairs CHASE.
CHASE holds a talk and a pubmeet each month, as well as
annual social events like a Christmas dinner and a summer
puntmeet. In 2002 CHASE held a conference for 120 people
titled 'Where Angels dare and VCs also tread' about the
relationships between Business Angels, Venture Capitalists
and Entrepreneurs which we supported with a time and custom-built
software.

Some web designers subscribe to the
idea that you shouldn't lead people away from your site.
We don't think that's right. If you are interested you
will stay, and if you aren't then perhaps something in
our list will interest you. There's lots of stuff here
for developers. |
